"The play was probably staged for the first time at Drury Lane on May 12, 1687, when James II was in the audience. … Sedley translated and adapted everything but the denouement of Terence's play, while interspersing among Terence's ten scenes an equal number of new scenesthat set in motion two new subplots" (Smith, p.184-185).
