APGRD Notes
It is likely that the ballets formed part of the action of this drama per musica. The opera was performed during the carnival season (between Christmas and Lent). Dramatis personae: Eteocle, Polinice, Antigona, Arbante, Cleante, Adrasto, Deifile, Argia, Silena, Tideo, Eurillo, Ombra d'Edippo. Several subplots are introduced, including love interests and comical servants and the ending is a happy one: Polinice acedes to the throne and appropriate couples are united. The opera must have been popular, as two updated versions of the libretto were published in Venice in 1675 (see Sartori Ids 9332-9333). Other productions in Legrenzi's lifetime: Naples 1680 (Sartori ID 9334); Milan 1684 (with additional characters; Sartori ID 9335); Modena 1690 (with additional characters, Sartori ID 9336).
