This was the second ballet which was used as an interval entertainment during the production of Sacchini's opera Calliroe. It is likely that it drew on Sophocles or Seneca. The first interval ballet for the same production was also choreographed by Saunier and was titled Medea e Giasone (Production ID 10714). The opera was performed by alumni musicians and dancers of the Carlsschule, the theatrical school established by the Duke Carl Eugen, affiliated with his military academy, and possibly also of his 'Ecole des Demoiselles'. It is likely that the alumni dancers were also involved in the interval ballets. The choreographer, 'Signor Saunier' is described in the libretto as 'maestro de balli di S.A.S.', in other words, the Duke Carl Eugen. The article on the choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre in the New Grove Opera mentions a 'V. Saunier' as Noverre's former colleague who disseminated Noverre's work.
