The libretto was an adaptation of Antonio Salvi's Astianatte (Florence 1701, Sartori ID 3265): La Andromaca. Drama en musica para representarse en el Teatro de la m. Ill. Ciudad de Barcelona en el año 1762 (Barcelona: Francisco Generas, 1762). This is either the first or the second Barcelona production of Jommelli's opera Astianatte, which had originally been written for Rome in 1741 (Sartori ID 3277). Another operatic production titled Andromaca had been given in Barcelona a year earlier, but though the libretto for that production does not name the composer, it is likely that that production used Jommelli's music as well (see Sartori ID 1914). The libretto for Jommelli's opera was a distant adaptation of Antonio Salvi's libretto Astianatte, first set by Perti for Florence in 1701 (see Sartori ID 3265). The libretto can be linked to Euripides via Racine's Andromaque: it is an adaptation of Racine's tragedy into an opera libretto. According to the operatic convention the ending is modified into a 'lieto fine' (happy ending).
