Henry Stead

Dr Henry Stead is Senior Lecturer in Latin at the University of St. Andrews. His research project “Brave New Classics” explores the relationship between the Greek and Roman classics and the international left. He was a Research Associate on the major AHRC-funded research project into working-class receptions of ancient Greek and Roman culture, led by Prof. Edith Hall and hosted by King’s College London (Jan 2013-Dec 2015). He previously held the Michael Comber Studentship for Classical Reception at the Open University and University of Oxford (2008-2011), during which he explored the reception of Catullus in Romantic-era Britain.

He is author of A Cockney Catullus (2015), co-author of A People’s History of Classics (2020) and co-editor of Greek and Roman Classics in the British Struggle for Social Reform (2016) and A Proletarian Classics (2022).
